Prior to intersession week our class met 8 times for one hour. We learned about what barbeque really is and watched Steven Raichelen show us how to barbeque chicken, pork, brisket and a few types of ribs. This helped introduce us to different things we might want to try and helped us learn how to barbeque. We also watched Steven to see how you could make a video about how to cook barbeque.

Day 1: City BBQ

Students visited City BBQ and had the opportunity to tour, eat and learn from the pros the secrets to making great barbecue.

Day 2:Selection Tuesday

Students selected the dish they are choosing to enter into the competition Thursday. Students are also finalizing recipes, selecting their meats, and directions and video instructions for our Big Red BBQ website.

Day 3: In The Kitchen

Students traveled to the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State to spend time in the kitchen preparing their meats, rubs and sauces.

Day4: Barbecue Competition

Students competed in a competition against the other students in the class.
Students had cooked their best barbecue and submitted it to a panel of judges. Families gathered together to enjoy all the students’ hard work and success.. Students also brought side dishes, as well as bringing friends and family. Family members had the chance to win door prizes like shirts, aprons and rubs and all the students got their very own meat thermometer, rubs, spice paste, apron, t-shirt, oven mitts and more.
